Tax-Aid is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1988 by a coalition of accountants and lawyers. Its mission is to provide free income tax preparation to low-income families throughout the Bay Area. Tax-Aid has always placed a special emphasis on increasing access to the Earned Income Credit and the Child Tax Credit.

In 2007, Tax-Aid prepared 3,077 returns. These taxpayers received over $2,978,044. Some refunds were as high as $4,500. In total, Tax-Aid coordinates 68 free tax preparation programs. In 2007 the combined campaigns served 12,376 clients — helping them to receive $11,927,240 in federal and state refunds.

Tax-Aid also serves as the lead agency for the United Way of the Bay Area’s “Earn It! Keep It! Save It!” campaigns in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. For more information on the campaigns, visit www.earnitkeepitsaveit.org.
